Highlander Movie - 1986

We all have movies we grew up with and which have meaning to us beyond their actual acting or technical level. For me, the original Highlander with Christopher Lambert is one of those movies.

Maybe it was ahead of its time, with all the obsession now over Outlander and its time travel. Because in Highlander we had a handsome Scottish man, a smart medically-trained woman in the modern era, and we watched how they interacted with each other. And of course we had the violent battles as well.

I love the small details in this movie. The way the transitions move from one era to another. Sean Connery is always a delight in any movie. The little looks and gestures which convey so much meaning.

Is the final battle scene a little hokey? Sure. And the way it all ends is a bit iffy, too. But, you know, this wasn't made to be a deep, insightful exploration into the nature of mankind. We're lucky we got as much as we did out of it, with its base being about men hacking into each other to slice each other's heads off.

Let's just ignore the movies that came afterwards :). I'm happy to think of Highlander as its own standalone world with just one saga which goes up until the 'final result'.

I've gone in to New York City and walked around to the places shown in the movie. That was a lot of fun. I haven't done the same in Scotland, but that could probably be a fun quest. There are some quite lovely scenes shot in Scotland.

In this era, it was nice to have a movie which showed a woman who was, generally, smart and respected. She did a few fairly idiotic things, but that's the way movies were. A woman had to end up a damsel in distress so she could be rescued by the hero.

It was also nice to have the 'chosen ones' be a mix of various types of cultures, although of course they were always men. Couldn't have a woman wielding a sword and holding her own in a fight. Still, progress comes in stages.
