Most of us are fascinated by royalty, and those of us who are foodies, are always curious about just what the royals eat. Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III is an excellent cookbook to learn about royal food habits; the author is a well-known British cookbook author, food critic, and most notably the son of Queen Camilla. The recipes include dishes served through the history of the Royals from Queen Victoria to present. Some of the dishes are not exciting, but are traditional English, and are probably responsible for the fact that UK food has a bad reputation. There are plenty of good dishes, though.

The recipes included range from traditional English dishes such as Kedgeree (a delicious breakfast dish), to curries, to Coronation chicken.

The book is colorful, and includes cute illustrations. It also includes some beautiful photographs of some of this dishes, but not all. If there is a drawback to this cookbook, that is the one thing lacking. However, the cookbook is good enough and has enough appealing dishes, that it’s still worth having it on your cookbook shelf.

All told, this is a great book to teach English history, as well as introduce readers to some of the best dishes in the UK (and some of the dishes that aren’t quite so appealing). It is highly recommended and is a fun one to curl up in a corner to read cover to cover.
